Ramadhar Singh, 1973 Ph.D. in social psychology and 2022 Distinguished Alumnus in Psychological Sciences of Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, USA, has been a Distinguished University Professor at Ahmedabad University, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India since July 7, 2016. He had earlier served as a Lecturer in Psychology at Patna University (1968-1973), an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (1973-79), and a Professor of Organizational Behavior at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (1979-1988). He moved to Singapore in 1988 and retired as a Professor of Psychology from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2010. He spent his 2003-04 sabbatical at the University of Rochester, New York, USA, and the University of Oxford, UK, and his 2008 sabbatical at Purdue University. He is the first Fellow of the Singapore Psychological Society (1992) and the first Professor of Psychology (1997) in Singapore. During 2010-16, he was the first Distinguished Professor of Management at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore.
Ramadhar Singh has conducted experimental research in management and psychology at levels of the individual (decision-making, impression formation, interpersonal attraction), the group (age-related changes, intergroup relations), the organization (diversity, job satisfaction, leadership effectiveness, prediction of performance, reward allocation), and the society (cross-cultural differences, distributive fairness, intuitive prosecution, prediction of donation) since 1970. His articles have appeared in prime international journals of psychology (e.g., Asian Journal of Social Psychology, Basic and Applied Social Psychology, British Journal of Social Psychology, Child Development, Cognitive Development, Developmental Psychology, European Journal of Social Psychology, Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, Journal of Genetic Psychology, Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Journal of Research in Personality, Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, Journal of Theoretical Social Psychology, Personal Relationships, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, Personality and Social Psychology Compass, etc.) and management (e.g., Applied Psychology: An International Review, Journal of Applied Psychology, Omega: The International Journal of Management Science, Organizational Behavior and Human Performance, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, etc.).
Ramadhar Singh is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society (1992), the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (1992), the American Psychological Association (1993), the Association for Psychological Science (1993), and the National Academy of Psychology (NAoP) India (2008). He served as a Consulting Editor of the Asian Journal of Social Psychology, Journal of Behavioral Decision Making, Journal of Theoretical Social Psychology, and Review of General Psychology, and as an Associate Editor of the Asian Journal of Social Psychology (2016-18) and the IIMB Management Review (2010-2022)
In 2013, the Association of Psychological Science, Washington DC, USA listed only him from India among the Faces and Minds of Psychological Science for improving the understanding of how people make inferences about missing information from information available. In 2022, the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, Washington DC, USA inducted him into the Heritage Wall of Fame for his “invaluable contributions to the field of personality and social psychology” and for his “passions and commitment” to psychological sciences. In 2021, the Indian Institute of Management Indore gave him its first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Research to “… celebrate his commitment to and a quest for knowledge of human behavior in organization and society.” In 2022, the Department of Humanities & Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur established an annual Prabha and Ramadhar Singh Distinguished Lecture in Psychology to celebrate their “sustained contributions to the advancement of Psychology and Management as a Science in Asia.” For making formal education easily accessible to rural children of his native village in Balara, the KAKA Community Learning Center of Nepal honored Ramadhar Singh with the KAKA 2022 Education Forever Award.
